Genetic Testing & Autism: What Parents Should Know

Will Genetic Testing Diagnose Autism?
Autism is a clinical diagnosis, meaning it is based on a child’s behavior and development. Genetic testing does not diagnose autism. Instead, it looks for underlying genetic factors that may be contributing.
Research shows that up to 30 to 40 percent of individuals with autism have an identifiable genetic condition where autism is one feature.
Identifying an underlying genetic cause can:
Help guide medical care and screening
Provide insight into what to expect over time
Offer important information for your child and your family
If Genetic Testing Is Negative, Does That Mean My Child Does Not Have Autism?
No. Your child’s diagnosis does not change based on genetic testing results.
If diagnostic genetic testing does not identify a clear genetic cause, it means we do not yet have an explanation. This is often referred to as multifactorial inheritance, where a combination of genetic and environmental factors likely play a role.
It is also important to remember that genetics is a rapidly evolving field. A negative result today does not mean there are no underlying genetic factors, only that current testing did not identify them.
Is Genetic Testing Recommended?
Organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics, and the American Academy of Neurology recommend genetic testing as part of the evaluation for children with autism.
The goal is not to label, but to better understand what may be contributing and to help inform care moving forward.
In integrative and naturopathic settings, many providers also find nutrigenetic testing helpful. This type of testing looks at how genetics may influence nutrient needs, metabolism, and dietary responses, offering another layer of insight into a child’s unique biology.
